The Best Sound Diffusers

Proper use of sound diffusers can turn your listening experience from flat and sterile to rich and full. Diffusers come in many shapes and sizes, usually with one thing in common. They are hard surfaces that reflect sound in various directions to fill the room with sound.

Although some people prefer to make their own diffusers (Please see our article 16 Ideas and Free Plans for DIY Sound Diffuser Panels.), there are many quality products that can be purchased ready to hang. Most of them are reasonably priced, easy to put up, very effective, and generally quite attractive.

Keep in mind that diffusers do not have to be consistent in your studio or home theater. Quite often a mixture of panels will create better sounds. Here are some of the best sound diffuser panels available.

11 Best Sound Diffusers

1) ATS Acoustic Panel 24x48x4 Inches, Beveled Edge

The ATS Acoustic Panel 24x48x4 Inches, Beveled Edge has a Noise Reduction Coefficient of 1.0 meaning that it absorbs 100 percent of the sound waves that come in contact with it and reflects additional sound. They absorb medium and high frequencies along with scatter frequencies between 200 and 5000 Hertz. The holes in the wood panel allow sounds to be absorbed by the foam back while the wood reflects the rest of the sound.

These are an excellent diffusion/absorbent option for recording studios, home theaters, offices, auditoriums, conference rooms, and more. Manufactured of MDF laminated onto M1 foam, the panels are 24″ x 48″ x 4″ thick. They are packaged individually in a box and weigh just under 14 pounds per panel. These attractive panels are available in four colors and have a 100% money-back satisfaction guarantee.

Hanging Notes: The size of the panels and/or the bevel design of the foam could make hanging these panels in a straight line a bit of a challenge. For level, consider using a chalk line, a laser level, or even a 4′ level. To attach them to the wall, use 3M High Strength 90 Spray Adhesive or double sided X-Fasten removable tape. (Because of the size and weight of the panels use strips of tape around the perimeter–not just short pieces in the corners.)

I would also give some consideration to screwing them onto the wall. For a couple of reasons.

  1. I do not really have complete faith in glue or tape with panels this heavy.
  2. Two, three, or four 1/8″ holes in the drywall per panel are way easier to patch than chunks of paint and/or drywall paper torn off with the glue.

2) BXI Quadratic Residue Sound Diffuser (2D)

BXI Quadratic Residue Sound Diffusers are 24″ x 24″ x 2.8″ thick and weigh 9.3 lbs. per panel. It is a 2 dimensional broadband diffuser that claims to scatter sound ranging from 410 Hertz to 24,571 Hertz. But it works best on sound waves between 544 Hertz and 2457 Hertz.

Made of high quality wood (birch), they arrive unfinished, ready to be stained, or painted, or oiled to suit your room’s design scheme. They are eco-friendly and odorless. This high quality diffuser provides a very natural sound quality free of echoes and flutter. The perfect diffuser for recording studio, home theater, a music room, or anywhere else you want better sound.

Hanging Notes: These diffusers are advertised as ready to hang. Except you have to provide the hangars. Two of the best ways are to use sawtooth picture hangars or drill holes in the diffuser and screw it into the wall. These are pretty heavy pieces of wood, so make sure you use a stud finder to fasten to solid framing. You may want to use spray glue or double sided tape. I would not. Stick with one of the first two mechanical fastening options.

3) BXI Quadratic Residue Sound Diffuser (1D)

The BXI Quadratic Residue Sound Diffuser (1D) has all of the great attributes of its sister diffuser listed above. With a few exceptions such as weight and sound range. Many people use both the 1D and 2D diffusers in their studios for more complete sound diffusion. This style of panel adds a sense of space to your sound by uniformly distributing sound energy horizontally.

BXI Quadratic Residue Sound Diffusers are 24″ x 24″ x 2.8″ thick and weigh 7.3 lbs. per panel. It is a one dimensional broadband diffuser that claims to scatter sound ranging from 544 Hertz to 24,571 Hertz.

4) TroyStudio Acoustic Sound Diffuser Panel

TroyStudio Acoustic Sound Diffuser Panels are inexpensive multi-pyramid shaped PVC plastic panels 12″ x 12″ x 1″ deep. These panels improve the uniformity of sound energy distribution in a room, helping to create a more balanced sound profile. Excellent for treating distortion such as comb filtering and standing waves. These are a perfect acoustic addition to recording studios, home theaters, office space, and anywhere better acoustics are wanted.

The elegant matte white finish allows them to fit in with most room designs. They can be placed on walls and/or ceilings in most rooms. The light weight panels are easy to cut for installation, clean when installed. They are paintable–allowing you to incorporate them into the look of your room.

These TroyStudio panels are available in 3 distinct patterns that can be mixed and matched for acoustics and aesthetics.

Hanging Notes: TroyStudios recommends recommends 3M 90 High Strength Spray Glue or double sided tape for installation. The panels are not heavy–weighing only 1/4 lb. per panel–making weight a non-problem for hanging. It is also possible to use command strips. But because the back of the panels are quite narrow, I think the suggestion of one of the reviewers is a very good one. Use push pins either in addition to, or instead of, tape or glue. You may also want to give some consideration to predrilling the panels and using 4 small screws in the drywall to hold them in place. (Use a nail set to make an indentation wherever you are drilling. Otherwise your drill bit will skitter all over your new diffuser.)

The Good

  • Inexpensive pyramid shaped PVC pyramid shaped panels
  • Available in 3 distinct patterns
  • 12″ x 12″ x 1″ deep panels
  • For use on walls and ceilings of recording studios, home theaters, etc.
  • Come in paintable white matte finish
  • Light and easy to hang

The Not so Good

  • Virtually nothing

The ATS Acoustic Diffuser is a 7 well Quadratic Residue Diffuser (QRD). They are precision manufactured in the USA using computer controlled equipment to achieve extreme accuracy. Made of high quality birch plywood, they are 22 7/8″ x 22 7/8″ x 6 1/2″ deep and weigh 20 lbs. Truly ready to install on drywall, concrete, or wood walls with the aluminum clips, screws, and anchors included with the installation kit.

These panels provide very effective diffusion starting at 325 Hertz all the way to 3 kHz. It arrives unfinished ready for paint, stain, oil, or clear-coat finish.

ATS Acoustics will custom make diffusers to your specifications if required. Their products can be found in over 50,000 buildings.

Hanging Notes: These are heavy diffusers with a serious hanging kit, which makes it simple to safely put up where you want. (ATS diffusers are most commonly used behind the listening position in the room.) Make sure they are at least 6′ from the listener’s ears to allow sufficient space for even diffusion to take place.

The Good

  • 7 well Quadratic Residue Diffuser
  • Precision manufacturing
  • Large diffuser – 23″ x 23″ x 6 1/2″
  • Effective diffusion between 325 Hertz and 3000 hertz

6) Acepunch AP1204 Quadratic Skyline Acoustic Wooden Diffuser

The Acepunch AP1204 Quadratic Skyline Acoustic Wooden Diffuser is 23.5″ x 23.5″ x 4″ thick. The 3D design prevents echoes–making sounds crisp and clear. Made of fine quality solid wood, these diffusers are sturdy, heavy, and eco-friendly.

The AP1204 diffuser suppresses reverberations in the mid to high frequency range. The tight, no-gap construction means that no sound leaks through. It all is diffused back into the room. Skyline diffusers are used in music studios, home theaters, offices, churches, schools, etc. to help provide good acoustic environments. The panels all come unfinished and ready for painting, staining, oil finish, or clear coat finish.

Acepunch makes more high quality wooden diffusers of different designs including 1 and 2 dimension units.

Hanging Notes: These diffusers are large and heavy. They do not come with any hanging hardware. You will have to supply your own. One option is sawtooth picture hangars that can be attached to the back of the diffuser, then hung on a nail or screw. Because of the weight, make sure you have a stud finder and anchor these to wooden framing. Another option is to just drill 4 holes in the face of the diffuser and screw it on the the wall. This will not affect the quality of diffusion.

You can also consider 3M glue or double sided tape. I would not try either of these. Panels weighing over 20 lbs. may put too much stress on the adhesive.

The Good

  • 3D Quadratic Skyline wooden diffuser
  • 23.5″ x 23.5″ x 4″ thick
  • Fine quality solid wood construction
  • Ready for finishing – paint, stain, oil, clear coat
  • Excellent for music studios, home theaters, offices, churches, school auditorium, etc.

The Not so Good

  • Virtually none

7) NeoHome Decorative PVC Acoustic Diffusion Panels

NeoHome Decorative PVC Acoustic Diffusion Panels are available in 4 different attractive designs–small diamond, square block, vertical block, and wave. They can be used as a single design or mix and match. All work equally well to amplify and diffuse sound in the room, and enhance sound distribution. The matte white finish is quite decorative out of the box, or they can be painted to suit your décor using an oil based paint. (Note: Before painting, wash the panels with a 50/50 vinegar/water solution and rinse well to remove any manufacturing residue.)

These economical panels are shipped 12 to a package. Each panel is 19.7″ wide x 19.7″ high. (Note: 2 styles are 1.6″ thick and 2 styles are 0.8″ thick.) They are made of premium PVC (Non- BPA), making them light weight and non-flammable. They are also lead free and contain no harmful chemical. The panels will diffuse sound in any room–home studios, home theaters, offices, etc. NeoHome provides a 1 year replacement warranty.

Hanging Notes: As great as these panels are at providing sound wave diffusion, mounting them can be a fair-sized pain because of the small (some say miniscule) perimeter lip. Use PL Premium to glue each panel to a piece of cardboard. (If the cardboard is bigger than the panels, you can use thick beads of PL, then cut off excess glue and cardboard once it is dry.) Then the cardboard and panels can be attached to the wall using 3M 90 Glue, double sided tape, even push pins. You may want a laser level to provide straight lines.

Construction Notes: These can be cut very well with a skill saw. Avoid chipping by using a fine tooth plywood blade installed backwards in the saw. If you have to cut around electrical outlets, make sure you have electrical box extenders and/or Oatey plastic trim rings to get a safe decent finish.

The Good

  • Inexpensive PVC diffusion panels
  • Multiple designs
  • Matte white finish can be painted
  • 12 panels per package – 19.7″ x 19.7″
  • Usable where ever sound needs diffusion
  • 1 year replacement warranty

The Not so Good

  • Difficult installation – see Hanging Notes above

8) AIKEAIKESI Wood Acoustic Diffuser Panel

The AIKEAIKESI Wood Acoustic Diffuser Panels are 11.8″ x 11.8″ x 1.2″ diffusers. They consist of 36 individual pine pieces glued onto backing. The face of each wooden block is angle cut to effectively scatter sound frequencies throughout the room. Each block is painted individually. Most of the colors are quite bright providing a colorful focal point in your recording studio, home theater, office, or anywhere else you need sound treatment.

These panels are all handmade and retain the original characteristics of the wood used during the manufacturing process–possibly including knots, wormholes, and heavy or light grain. It is also possible that the same color used on different pieces of wood will not appear exactly the same. (Softer wood will absorb more paint.) Wood can also shrink while drying leaving small (1 – 3 mm) gaps between blocks. This is a natural process and will not affect diffuser performance.

This diffuser will help eliminate echoes, creating crisp and clear recordings or audio from music or movies. The panels come with a 100% satisfaction refund or replace guarantee.

Hanging Notes: For best results, hang these panels at least 6 feet away from the sound source and from your ears. (Generally, on the wall opposite the sound source and/or on the ceiling.) Hanging at least 4 panels together will provide better diffusion results. The panels can be attached to the wall using 3M spray on glue, double sided tape, screws, and even nails (Yikes). At 2.2 lbs. they are not heavy, but screws provide more security, and in the long term, cause less damage to drywall. Predrill holes in a narrow part of the panels, find studs with stud finder, and screw them to the wall. I you must use nails, predrill the panel to prevent splitting.

You may want to give some consideration to gluing the panels onto 3/8″ ply wood (1/4″ is a little thin) then hanging the whole thing on the wall. You can also install a 2″ wide picture frame around your panels.

The Good

  • 3D skyline-type diffuser panels
  • 11.8″ x 11.8″ x 1.2″ thick
  • Beveled pine blocks pre-painted multiple colors
  • Handmade with characteristics of wood – knots, cracks, shrinkage, etc.
  • Good diffusion in recording studios, home theaters, offices, churches, etc.
  • 100% satisfaction guarantee – replace or refund

The Not so Good

  • Virtually none

9) Sound Absorption/Diffusion Acoustic Panel

The 24 Pack Acoustic Panels Soundproof Wall Panels manufactured by Bubos has a Noise Reduction Coefficient of 0.95 meaning that it absorbs 95% of the sound waves that come in contact with it, and reflects the other 5%. They absorb high frequencies and scatter frequencies and they come in three colors and two pack sizes. The only way these could be better is if they had holes in panels to allow sounds to be absorbed by the foam back while the wood reflects the rest of the sound but the high density and eco-friendly polyester do quite well, and better than many options on the market.

The panels will reduce echo and reverb. They can be mounted on both walls and ceilings.

These are an excellent diffusion/absorption option for home theaters, offices, auditoriums, conference rooms, and more. But they are particularly effective in recording studios. Manufactured of MDF laminated onto M1 foam, the panels are 12″ x 12″ x 0.4″ thick. They are packaged 24 to a box and weigh just under 3 lbs. per panel. These attractive panels are available in 3 colors and have a 100% money-back satisfaction guarantee.

The Good

  • NRC of 0.95 – absorbs 95% of sound waves and reflects the balance
  • Scatters frequency absorption
  • Made of high density and eco-friendly polyester fibers with foam
  • 12″ x 12″ x 0.4″ thick
  • Available in 3 colors
  • 100% money back guarantee

The Not so Good

  • Some complaints about being able to hang them straight – please see Hanging Notes above

10) ATS Acoustic Tri-Corner Bass Traps

The Sound Absorption/Diffusion Corner Bass Trap is another 2 in 1 product that absorbs bass frequencies while diffusing lower frequencies between 125 Hertz and 4000 Hertz. It has a Noise Reduction Coefficient of 1.05–meaning it absorbs 105% of the sound waves that reach it. The other sound waves are scattered back into the room. It works particularly well at eliminating low-frequency reverberation, standing waves, and slapback.

These are big, thick, and heavy panels (18 x 2 x 18 inches weighing 6 lbs.) made of lightweight rigid fiberglass core. It is available in 10 colors and will fit with the décor in most rooms. They are shipped 1 panel to a box. The applications are virtually limitless, including music rooms, home theaters, offices, listening rooms, school rooms, auditoriums, etc. Each bass trap is handcrafted in the US.

Hanging Notes: For best results mount one in each of the 8 corners of the room. (Bass frequencies tend to gather in room corners.) Another option is to start by installing the first one on the floor and then continue to stack as many as you want in the corners. The panels come with dedicated self-impaling mounting clips, screws, and anchors.

Customer image

The Good

  • 2 in 1 absorber and diffuser
  • NRC of 0.44 – meaning it absorbs 44% of sound waves
  • Diffuses 56% of frequencies between 63 Hertz and 2000Hertz
  • Eliminates low frequency reverberation, standing waves, slap back
  • Available in 10 colors
  • 4 panels per box
  • 100% money back guarantee

The Not so Good

  • Virtually nothing

11) Acoustic Design Works – Mondrian Kit of Acoustic Panels

The Acoustic Design Works – Mondrian Kit of Acoustic Panels manufactured by Acoustic Design Works Store has a Noise Reduction Coefficient of 0.85 meaning that it absorbs 85% of the sound waves that come in contact with it and reflects the other 60%. They absorb low frequencies and scatter frequencies and minimize unwanted sounds by up to 85 percent.

The panels will reduce echo and reverb. Fabric-covered, solid acoustic wall panels from Acoustic Design Works have a substantially higher Noise Reduction Control than foam panels for a number of reasons: ADW acoustic panels include a sound-absorbing core that has been scientifically constructed and is wrapped in high-quality acoustic fabric. Simple wedge and pyramid foam paneling, on the other hand, allows sound waves to travel through and bounce off any wall on which they are installed, increasing noise and echo. In a word, ADW acoustical panels are better at both working and looking.

These are an excellent diffusion/absorbent option for home theaters, offices, auditoriums, conference rooms, and more. But they are particularly effective in recording studios. The panels weigh 18 pounds and measure 48” x 24”x 1” and the others measure 24” x 24”x 1”. They are easy to apply as they mount to the wall with the included brackets.

The Good

  • NRC of 0.85 – absorbs 85% of sound waves and reflects the balance
  • Scatters frequencies between 200 and 5000 Hertz
  • Made of fabric with beautiful coarse woven fabric.
  • 19.7″ x 19.7″ x 2.1″ thick
  • Made in the USA
  • Available in 8 colors
  • 100% money-back guarantee

The Not so Good

  • Some complaints about being able to hang them straight – please see Hanging Notes above

Buying Guide for Best Sound Diffusers

Here is a quick buyer’s guide to sound diffusers–the what, where, why, and how that you need to know.

Acoustic Diffusers – What are They?

Acoustic diffusers are generally panels consisting of hard material like wood or PVC shaped into peaks and valleys and angled surfaces that scatters sound waves produced inside a room back into the room. Diffusion panels maintain a fuller and more lively sound ensuring more satisfying listening experiences.

The best acoustic diffusers help reduce slap echoes, flutters, and comb filtering.

Acoustic Diffusion – Why is it Important?

Acoustic diffusion is important and necessary because of the nature of sound waves and how they travel. A sound wave is emitted from the source, travels across the room, hits the opposite wall, and is reflected straight back. So far so good. But then the trouble starts. Because there is another wave right behind the first one. The reflected wave runs into the new wave, combines with it and produces echoes, flutters, and reverberation. This is all caused by sound waves of differing power and speeds moving in straight lines in the room.

What we hear are the same sounds multiple times, with less power creating an uncomfortable and annoying listening experience because the reflected sound takes longer to get to the ear than the direct sound from the speakers or instruments.

Diffusers eliminate the problems by bouncing sound waves in multiple directions. For more detailed information on diffusion please see Acoustical Surfaces Inc.

Acoustic Diffuser – How do They Work?

Audio sound diffusion is loosely defined as the scattering of sound waves, reducing the sense of localization.

By scattering sound waves around a room so they arrive at our ears at different times because of the distance travelled, and with different intensity because of the multiple sound waves (note that there is no total sound energy loss). All of the various sound waves have different timing, distance to travel, and intensity. Combined we have now tricked our ears and brain into thinking the room is larger than what it is and making for a more spacious sound environment.

At the same time diffusers eliminate echoes, reverberation, and flutters. (I am not sure if diffusers totally eliminate all of these problems, or partially confuse the issue enough so we do not hear what is there.)

Acoustic Diffusers – Which is the Best?

Probably the most widely used diffusers are the molded plastic PVC designs. They are available in many styles including pyramid, wave, block, among others. Mostly they work very well, but one of the main attractions is price. It is possible to buy 8 square feet of these panels for under $20.00.

Another type of popular diffuser panel is the combination absorption/diffusion panels made of 2″ thick heavy absorbent foam with a 1/4″ MDF face. Generally they absorb 2/3 of the sound waves that reach them and reflect the balance. Many of them have very creative designs and are available in multiple colors. These are great panels that will cost between $10.00 and $15.00 per square foot.

Most professional recording studios opt for solid wood diffusers. Although quite expensive, these types of diffusers not only look great, they are engineered to provide the best sound diffusion. Constructed from soft woods–quite often pine– they provide excellent quality diffusion. They can be painted, stained, oiled, or clear coated to suit the room’s style and décor.

It is not difficult to make your own diffusers for less cost. You can also customize the sizes to fit your particular situation. For more information on making your own diffusers, please see our article 16 Ideas and Free Plans for DIY Sound Diffuser Panels.

Acoustic Diffusion – How Much do I Need?

It can be a little disconcerting seeing a picture of a recording studio showing walls of diffusion panels–specially if you are considering buying some that cost a couple of hundred dollars for a 4 square foot panel. Or make your own.

Take heart. The average home recording studio will require somewhere between 32 and 50 square feet of diffusion panels–depending on room size. Ultimate Acoustics provides a free room analysis giving you information on the types of acoustic panels, and how many acoustic panels you need. Go to the <ua-acoustics.com> and click on Free Room Analysis.

Acoustic Diffusers – Where to Place Them?

Looking up a picture of acoustic diffusers hoping to get an idea of where to place them and seeing them on virtually every wall surface can be a little discouraging. As mentioned above you should only require 32 – 50 square feet of diffusers in a recording studio.

The most common diffuser positioning points in a studio are on the back wall opposite the sound source or on the ceiling between the sound source and the listening position. These are 2 of the most common reflection points in any room.

FAQs About Sound Diffusers

There seems to be a few misunderstandings about diffusers. Here are answers to some common questions.

1) Do wooden sound diffusers work?

Yes. Wooden diffusers are among the best, and most popular panels. They are also very versatile and can be manufactured in various designs.

2) What is the difference between sound diffusers vs acoustic panels?

Sound diffusers are usually hard material such as wood or PVC constructed to control sound aberrations like echoes, standing waves, and reverb in a room by deflecting sound waves in such a way as to fill the room. This makes for a cleaner listening or recording experience. Acoustic panels are usually foam or polyester and absorb a certain percentage of the sound waves that contact them.

3) How do audio diffusers work?

Diffusers are used to treat the sound created in a room. They are generally used in addition to–or instead of–acoustic absorption panels, because they do not remove sound energy. Instead, diffusers will reduce the clutter of echo and reverb, making the sound feel alive and true.

4) Are foam panels good for diffusion?

No. Acoustic foam is used to absorb sound created in a room. Diffusers are made of hard materials such as wood or PVC to reflect sound waves.

End Notes

Just a couple of things to add to your Diffuser knowledge base.

Ultimate Acoustics

Ultimate Acoustics has been around for over 40 years making some of the best acoustic products available. They are an independent manufacturing company that controls their entire production process. Their products are used by multiple artists and organizations around the world. They have an excellent reputation. They are headquartered in Kyiv, Ukraine. And ship from there.

Cautionary Note: As I write this, it seems the war drums are beating between the Ukraine and Russia. Depending on what happens, you should make sure that your order will not be interrupted, or worse, disappear into the nighttime–never to be seen again–along with your money.

Hanging Notes

Here are 2 more options for hanging diffusers–one for heavy wood and one for foam backed panels.

Z-Clip Hangars for Heavy Panels

Z-Clip Hangars–also called French Cleat Hangars–are a quick, easy, and very secure method to mount heavy wooden panels. Just attach one section to the wall and another to the back of the panel. Then they simply slide together holding the panel tight to the wall. The Hangman Z-Hangar is available in lengths from 6″ to 30″ making it simple to find the size or combination of sizes you need.

Metal Sawtooth Foam Board Hangars

Metal Sawtooth Foam Board Hangars are a simple way to hang foam backed diffusers. They are a self-impaling clip that will stick into the foam and hang from a nail or screw on the wall. Use 2 or 3 on bigger panels.
