Acoustic Diffuser – How do They Work?
Audio sound diffusion is loosely defined as the scattering of sound waves, reducing the sense of localization.
By scattering sound waves around a room so they arrive at our ears at different times because of the distance travelled, and with different intensity because of the multiple sound waves (note that there is no total sound energy loss). Another type of popular diffuser panel is the combination absorption/diffusion panels made of 2″ thick heavy absorbent foam with a 1/4″ MDF face. Generally they absorb 2/3 of the sound waves that reach them and reflect the balance. Many of them have very creative designs and are available in multiple colors. Looking up a picture of acoustic diffusers hoping to get an idea of where to place them and seeing them on virtually every wall surface can be a little discouraging. As mentioned above you should only require 32 – 50 square feet of diffusers in a recording studio.

Z-Clip Hangars for Heavy Panels

Metal Sawtooth Foam Board Hangars are a simple way to hang foam backed diffusers. They are a self-impaling clip that will stick into the foam and hang from a nail or screw on the wall. Use 2 or 3 on bigger panels.
